Teaching Strategies For All Abilities

Pt. A (30 min) - Lecture Portion:

  • Rapport & expectations
  • Routines & consistency
  • Universal language
  • Visual Supports
  • Transitioning strategies

Pt. B (15 min) - Applying Strategies in Class (Video Portion):

  • Preparing for a class or student
  • Instruction strategies - visual supports, reinforcement strategies, universal language, transitioning, ending/calming before exit


Workshop #5: 11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Behavior & Class Management

Pt. A (30 min) - Lecture Portion:

  • Behavior as communication
  • Functions of behavior (WHY)
  • Teaching strategies - ABC method, shaping, appropriate instructional responses for each function (escape, sensory, attention, tangible)

Pt. B (15 min) -Video Portion:

  • Specific video scenarios


Workshop #6: 12:00 p.m. - 12:45 p.m.

Safety In All Abilities

This workshop will review critical safety precautions to take while in a training facility.

The presentation will also include a virtual tour of Spectra’s facility- highlighting danger zones & precautions taken.

  • Potential Athlete Risks - physical limitations and AAI, seizures, vision & hearing impairments, allergies, behavioral, flight risks, facility precautions, mitigating risks


Workshop Format:

  • Each workshop is scheduled to run for approximately 45 minutes.
  • Upon conclusion of the presentation portion, there will be a Q&A session.
  • Any remaining time will be taken as a quick break before the next presentation.

Karissa Johnson is the proud owner of Spectra Gymnastics, a specialized studio catering to individuals impacted by an array of developmental & intellectual disabilities. Her programs are carefully designed to create a culture of inclusion while supporting many areas of each student’s personal development.

Through Spectra’s unique programs, curriculum & games, students have a multitude of opportunities to support development in cognition, social, executive functioning, recreation, sensory integration, motor development and much more! Following her extensive training in ABA therapy, Karissa successfully launched her company in 2014, which has grown to be a known, valued resource in her community.

Fueled by a passion for serving others, Karissa loves sharing her knowledge & experience with others, and sharing her passion for advocacy towards inclusion across the world. She is honored to be a part of Gymnastics B.C.’s virtual conference this year.
